How to Build a Retinol Skincare Routine

Back to Beauty Guide

Retinol is one of the most studied skincare ingredients, but it requires a careful introduction. Learn how to incorporate it into your routine safely and effectively.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that has been extensively studied for its effects on skin appearance. It is widely used in skincare for its ability to support the look of smoother, more even-toned skin over time.

Start Slow

If you are new to retinol, start with a low concentration (0.025%–0.05%) and use it just once or twice a week. Your skin needs time to adjust. Jumping straight to daily use or high concentrations can cause dryness, redness, and peeling.

Apply at Night Only

Retinol can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Always apply it as part of your evening routine, and never skip SPF in the morning when using retinol regularly.

The Sandwich Method

To minimise irritation, try the "sandwich" method: apply a thin layer of moisturiser first, then retinol, then another layer of moisturiser on top. This buffers the retinol and reduces the chance of dryness.

Ingredients to Avoid Mixing

Do not use retinol on the same night as AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C — combining these can cause irritation. On retinol nights, keep the rest of your routine simple: cleanser, retinol, moisturiser.

When to Expect Results

Most people begin to notice changes in skin texture and tone after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Patience is essential — retinol is a long-term investment in your skin.
