How to Reduce Frizz: A Complete Guide

Back to Beauty Guide

Frizzy hair is one of the most common hair concerns. From the right products to the right techniques, here's everything you need to know to tame frizz for good.

What Causes Frizz?

Frizz occurs when the hair cuticle is raised, allowing moisture from the air to enter the hair shaft and cause it to swell unevenly. Dry, damaged, or porous hair is most prone to frizz.

Hydration Is the Foundation

The most effective way to fight frizz is to keep hair well-moisturised. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, and incorporate a weekly deep conditioning mask to replenish moisture.

Apply Products to Wet Hair

Anti-frizz serums and leave-in conditioners work best when applied to freshly washed, towel-dried hair. This seals the cuticle while it is still damp and receptive to product.

Dry Gently

Rough towel-drying is a major frizz trigger. Instead, gently squeeze excess water from hair with a microfibre towel or a soft cotton T-shirt. Avoid rubbing.

Use a Diffuser or Cool Setting

High heat opens the cuticle and increases frizz. If you use a blow dryer, use a diffuser attachment and keep the heat on medium or low. Finish with a cool shot to seal the cuticle.

Argan Oil as a Finishing Step

A few drops of argan oil applied to dry hair helps smooth the cuticle and add shine without weighing hair down. It is one of the most effective finishing products for frizz-prone hair.
